Because of Celtic's irish roots, and support for the republic of ireland, rangers fans fly union jacks as a retort. The "england" flags you see are actually Northern Irish flags, which are similar, but are now banned from the stadium. Rangers fans have taken up british nationalism basically to wind up celtic fans, pure and simple.

God Save the Queen and Rule Brittania are played at Ibrox before every game, and are sung by the fans, much in the way celtic fans sing "fields of athen rye" (an irish folk song).

Both are scottish teams. but its all about the rivalry - the idea that it is associated with northern ireland has no basis - sectarianism shown by both sets of fans has nothing to do with nationalism.

Rangers have strong connections with the protestants in Northern Ireland (many of whom support Glasgow Rangers). The Northern Irish protestants favour remaining part of the Union whereas the catholics want unity with the Irish Republic. The singing of English songs by Rangers supporters is a reflection of the Unionist stance by the protestants in Northern Ireland. This can be viewed dimly by other supporters in Scotland particularly when they sing the English National Anthem, God Save the Queen (King). When the English National Anthem was written, God was invoked to save the King from the Scots whom they were at war with at the time.

Every November Rangers fans almost adopt, as their own personal property, the red poppy which is used as an acknowledgement to the fallen in conflicts. However, with Rangers' underlying sectarian roots, because Her Majesty's troops helped defend Northern Ireland from the IRA, they seem to adopt the poppy as their own. Fans even have the poppy on their scarves. Her majesty's troops abseil from the stand and there's a parade in the ground. I once saw an unofficial scarf seller, and I swear 2/3 of the merchandise was either orange, referring to Northern Ireland or depicted pictures of King Billy on his white steed obviously celebrating at the Battle of the Boyne. The Northern ireland flag fluttering majestically abouve this scarf stand was a giveaway. he wouldn't sell these things unless there was a demand. There is a stench of Northern Ireland in all things connected with Rangers. It's time the supporters entered the 21st century, acknowledge what's happened in the past, and move on. When Rangers plummeted to the lowest division after their financial irregularities, only Rangers fans shed a tear. I wonder why.
