The first time I heard the phrase was from an msp making a speach and it was a reference to Sectarianism in the whole of Scotland. There may be more vocal or more numerous examples in the west but that is where the majority of the people are. It is a society problem not a football problem and proportionately there are as many sectarian bigots at any other club in scotland as there are at Rangers.

As I am sure you will have noticed from the Hearts fans.

"Scotlands shame" was a line made up by some bigotted Celtic fan who used minor examples of fans behaviour to try disassociate their clubs fans from ours, ignoring their fans equally stupid vocal and violent minority.

Most Rangers fans are good people, some are numpties, some are tagging along for the bigotry. Same goes for Celtic.

The term itself is both hypocritical and ludicrous in the manner used by the people it originated from.

RIRA - learn facts, the line was only part of a localised version of the song and was eradicated long before the Union was established, hundreds of years ago. Flower of Scotland is openly attacking the English in its words and was written in the last few decades.

I don't believe football fans are Scotlands shame. All bullshit aside. In real life I detest violence but badly behaved supporters don't have the most damaging impact on the population, neither does religious bigotry or racism. Scotlands shame are the politicians, police, doctors, councils. hospitals, judges and the rich who exploit and discriminate against the working classes.

That is why Rangers fans aren't Scotlands shame.

Biker: "we don't hate the country we live in" (a clear jibe at catholics in Scotland). Then tell me why you all run around in England tops and also sing the Queen's anthem when contained in that vile song there is a line that talks about CRUSHING REBELLIOUS SCOTS. If i were a Scot i'd take offence to this and would question my allegience to such a people and entity. Obviously you like part of your Scottishness - just not the part that would have you stand against the brits or your whore of a queen. So tell me once again, "you are the people"...right i got it now.

Because its football, and nothing in football can be regarded as 'shamful'. To me Scotland's real shame is the system and how we allow paedophiles to roam the streets and not some uncivilised group of people who cannot control themselves.
